Forecast for today was WNW and a midday high tide i.e. not at all ideal for Shingleshire. So I decided to make the trip for my first time to the south coast's premier (only?) reef break - Kbay. After a hassle free drive I met up with Colin and Gregg on arrival and sailed Broad Bench. To be honest it wasn't great. Very gusty wind and tiny swell. The occasional clean waist high set pushed in allowing a couple of turns but there wasn't much to write home about.

Had lunch and then sailed The Ledges with Rod who turned up for the afternoon. Much better. The wind filled in to well powered 5.3 levels and the swell also improved. Waves got up to the chest high range with the occasional head high set allowing some half decent riding and first class jumping. I got another 5 well rotated loops in the bag but my personal highlight of the day was a mahoosive straight jump (felt like easy 15-20ft...so was probably less than half that...) that I landed cleanly and then planed away...and right next to JC who was in the water taking pics so maybe I'm on camera! 10-15 other sailors were on the break alongside Rod and I but the clear standout was Timo who was going HUGE on some of his back loops.

A great day's sailing. Not at all epic by Kbay standards (apparently) but still loads of fun. The best part of 6 hours on the water in a beautiful location illuminated for the majority of the day by glorious sunshine. Well worth the trip. Journey time was only a shade over 2 hours so I will be back.
